Might I request an ounce of honesty from you today, my friend? I come bearing you no ill will. I simply seek to see if you've heard some of the rumors I've been chasing, and if you indeed have anything to do with them

Enemies we may be, but I know you keep a code, and so I think I can trust you to be honest. Are you willing to chat, bird? It's all idle curiosity, after all. Perhaps I'll give away something which will allow you to kill me later.

No, my lord, believe me, I like it even less than you do.

One is a chance. Twice is a coincidence. One more of these notes and I may have to begin taking them seriously. The choice of Forna isn't just some passing fancy, either. Whoever chose it knew it was a name that would generate talk among the people. And likely they knew exactly where the heirs to the true Forna were. It's not as though I've made much effort to hide it. I've practically dared their enemies to come after them here, and see how far they get.

Perhaps that's what this is? Some sort of warped revenge for taking the two of them under my wing? That would be the simplest answer, and yet I think something is missing from it.

I almost want to believe our good friend the Crow is behind this, but it's not his style. There are so many things he could do that would be more direct and more showy. This is too deliberate and too sneaky for him. But I don't know who else could be behind it.

I think Rosie understands this year that the sun is only going to come up less and less in the coming months. She's very disappointed by it, just like she is every year, but she'll have to live with it! We're already very snowed in, though of course the snow never quite melts away this far north. Luckily for me, Rosie seems quite adept at reading. In fact, unless I'm mistaken, it's becoming one of her favorite hobbies. I've caught her reading storybooks to Devon, now and then, when they're with the nurse. She always hides it just as soon as she can, but I'm not quite that easily fooled. Of course, I'm not about to subject her to any humiliation, either.

Of course, she reads the story of Egwene most, I've found. Through careful deduction when she doesn't think I'm looking! That's hardly any surprise at all, but I'm sure she'll grow out of it as she gets older.

The children and I will be spending part of the day in the chapel tomorrow, before the festivities get under way. While you're welcome to spend your time how you'd like, I thought that you, at least, Colleen, would appreciate the opportunity to join us in lighting some candles. Rory, I would be glad to have your company as well.

The men are planning some celebrations for later in the night, and you're welcome to join in those as well. The children will be put to bed early, of course.

I'm afraid I've been just as useless this month as I imagined I would be some time ago. The children are all very quiet these days, but I suppose I'm probably worse than all of them. It's simply very hard not to remember my dear Lynette, this month. The anniversary of her death and the Night of the Dead, all in one.

Rosie is the worst of them, but I'm hardly surprised. She did love her mother so. Aiden tries to be strong, but he's still so young. And Devon was too young when she died to truly understand, and I think that only makes him the more confused when Rosie is at her worst. He asks questions, and Aiden gets grumpy and snaps at him, and then I have a sobbing little boy on my hands as well as my daughter.

My men are putting together arrangements for the Night of the Dead celebrations, and I'm afraid I can't find the heart to contribute at all. I suppose this is why they have kept their jobs, however, is covering for my little errors.

Something's different.

I dislike it. The two of them both, this time, not just the girl. There's something going on here, between them, and while I certainly don't know what's spurred it on, I certainly don't wish to see it continue without knowing what it is.

Of course, I doubt I'll find anything out by asking, things are never that easy. But ... hm.

I'll find this out one way or another, certainly. I'll ask Aiden to keep an eye out, and I know he'll tell me whatever he sees. Other than that, well, I'll have to do some observation of my own. And it shouldn't be so difficult at all.

Well, now, I believe we've missed Wednesday again, but that's becoming quite usual and I don't think anyone truly minds. I hardly expect many answers to this question given my reputation, but I've rather enjoyed the more philosophical questions lately, so I pose one to you here. Though still much more personal than the others, but I rather like some character to these, as well.

After you die, you are taken to the Dragons, or before the Goddesses if that's your indulgence, and they begin to judge your life and decide whether to take you to heaven or hell. Now, I think most people are aware before they die of where they're most likely to end up, but that's not the question I have to present.

The Dragons, or Goddesses, withhold their answer of "heaven or hell" from you until the session is over. Before they give you the ultimate judgment, they name for you your most impressive virtue and your most distressing vice.

Now, again, I hardly expect answers to this, as frighteningly personal as the question is, but pick one of the two and tell me which they name. If you're feeling generous, you can certainly name both, but it's by no means required. What is your virtue, or your vice, as the powers above fairly and objectively judge it?

I suppose I'm likely to get mostly "virtue" answers, as well, but I never said that was unacceptable.

Now, that is unusual.

Rory's noticed, as well, I see. Hardly a name you'd expect to be thrown around so recklessly, is it? He certainly doesn't like it, either, and I can't say I blame him. When one's own House is being used by another to promote whatever cause they think they're going to spread to the rest of the country, well.

If it were any other name, it'd hardly be worth the attention, though, so I suppose I shouldn't pay this any mind. A strange coincidence chosen by a group of rebels that, before the year is out, will realize they have no footing to stand upon. There's nothing else to it. Before long, this will be gone entirely, and the rest of the country will go on marching without this nonsense. Oh, they will have Forna, but it will not be the Forna of thieves and rebels. And that's simply the way of it.

In the meantime, I ought to put Lord Rory at rest somehow. But what, exactly, to do? Hm.

Now, that's unusual.

That shipment ought to have arrived three weeks ago. Bridges out and trouble with brigands, and half what I had been expecting, on top of that. Quite the run of bad luck, the poor man, but he'll only get half his gold for the effort given, and nothing more.

But there have never been problems along that supply route before. I suppose this country is changing, perhaps for the worse in some ways, though it's all necessary, but I have to say that my imports being tampered with is something I hadn't expected in the least.

There's already another shipment that's a week late. I wonder if they'll have similar tales to tell. And why, if they do.

And that's the absolute last thing I need. You were always so firm on not listening to your sister before, Rory. Whatever's come up now to give you pause? Moping about the castle, dragging your feet, don't think I haven't noticed it. Even Aiden's noticed it, really, and that says quite a lot about your behavior.

I wonder, is it just remorse after how long it's been? Nearly a year now, since we torched Mera. At your request! Whatever ideas I planted in your head, whatever information I gave you, you were still the one who wanted to see it fall. And far be it from me to deny that request! Maybe guilt is getting to you at last, and the realization that war is not a game to be played at all, that there are prices to pay and consequences to be had. Not the glory you hoped for?

Hm, well, I'll need to get you back on track soon, then. The question is, where to start.

It's quite difficult to believe July is almost over, isn't it? Just today, I was noting down the date and was suddenly quite struck by how soon the month will be coming to an end! And with August upon us, it means the end of summer is approaching with haste, and then we'll be locked into another dreadful winter once again.

I suppose there's truly little difference between one month and the next in the most specific way of looking at things -- the only separation between months is a date, after all -- but it just seems like time goes by all the quicker the older I get. Soon enough Rosie will be eight. One of the last safe years before she becomes a teenager, and how greatly I dread that day. She'll completely forget I ever meant a thing to her, I'm certain! Children.

Though I must admit, it does remind me of an anniversary that I dread to remember. I expect myself to be entirely useless during the entire month of October. It seems as though it's been hardly any time at all since my dear wife passed.

My, I imagine the summer weather here is quite unusual to the two of you, Colleen, Rory. We do our best with what we have, of course, but the sunlight can be grating before you grow used to it. It's altogether quite irritating, if I were asked. I greatly prefer the long nights in the winter.

Hm, regardless, might you have need of some thicker curtains? It's easily done. A favor to my dear family.

Rosie's still asking about pegasi, I'm afraid. Colleen, I suppose you're to thank for the continued questions? I don't mind terribly, Rosie's always loved them, but it simply grows harder to discourage every year.

Really, must this antagonizing of one another continue? We are all family, now, let us begin to act like it. I was under the impression that you agreed with me on that matter, Colleen, from how much Rosie has been absolutely gushing about you whenever she has the chance. To save you the trouble, I'm already well aware that you're not happy and you will fight me with every breath in your body, love, but honestly. You are brother and sister, at least begin to act the part. I cannot play babysitter to the two of you with all of my time.

It must be so pleasant to live in the southern parts of Korin at this time of year. I must confess that I'm quite used to the cold by now, but it does grow tiring when we're half into May and there's still not a single sign of spring, much less summer! Everything is still quite frozen over.

Although, my daughter has been more spritely and cheerful than ever. At least I have something to warm the cold days here! Though she's been asking about pegasi again and I just haven't the heart to tell her that if I give her one, I'm afraid she'll fly away and never come see her father again.

Why, my lord, it's a bit late for second thoughts. I trust you'll move out of this sulking fit eventually, but you certainly are skilled at trying my patience, in the meantime. You said you knew what Sarrca was, my lord. Your sister's shock, I suppose, is tolerable, considering she was the one wed to me. But you? My lord, you should have known. This is the contract you made, the one you signed your sister away to.

You carry the weight on your back, my lord, but buckling underneath it is only going to hurt you in the end. Accept it. It's for the best in the end regardless. I did promise you Forna.

Hm, besides that. I suppose now with the wedding out of the way, it's time to plant some other seeds. Perhaps they can even distract him from his ridiculous self-pity, if they're sown correctly. A few names, here and there, a few pieces of guilt. That will be all that's necessary, I believe.

Really, my lord, what is the rush? It's not as though there's any hurry at all. Even were we marching against your enemies this very day, there would still not be a rush. Things are going simply as planned. I've far more skill at this than you, so you'll have to trust me whether you like it or not.

Who else do you have, precisely? No one. No one at all, my lord, and isn't that a shame? Not even your sister, now, not anymore.

Leave it to me. It's all under control.
